prof. UW dr hab. Piotr Romanowski (Head of Studies)

PhotoMy academic interests are at the intersection of sociolinguistics and educational linguistics, with a particular focus on multilingualism and multilingual education. My research output consists of two monographs, eight (co-)edited volumes, over 50 articles and book chapters as well as two book reviews. My latest monograph Family Language Policy in the Polish Diaspora: A Focus on Australia was published by Routledge in 2021. I am chief editor of Journal of Multilingual Theories and Practices and the book series Language Learning and Multilingualism. In the academic year 2022/23 I was a Bekker NAWA Research Fellow at University College London where I worked on a project investigating the presence of the Polish language in the urban spaces of the city.

prof. UW dr hab. Agnieszka Otwinowska-Kasztelanic

PhotoMy research revolves around cross-linguistic influences, vocabulary acquisition, multilingualism, childhood bilingualism, foreign language teaching and CLIL. I have been an active member of the International Association of Multilingualism (executive board 2018-2022) and two European COST Actions (IS0804 and IS1306). I am a teacher trainer and course books writer.

Photo I am a professor at the University of Szczecin. My research interests focus on sociolinguistics and bilingualism. I published Multilingualism and English: The Canton of Zurich as a linguistic paradigm in 2013. My latest book Pary dwujęzyczne w Polsce (Bilingual couples in Poland) came out in 2019.

prof. UAM dr hab. Anna Szczepaniak-Kozak

PhotoI am an Associate Professor at the Institute of Applied Linguistics at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. I am the author of seven books, the co-editor of seven monographs, and the author of more than 50 papers or monograph chapters. My main research interests are in multilingualism and diversity in education, interlanguage pragmatics and discourse analysis, including studies of offensive language, hate speech and radicalisation  conveyed in language. Apart from teaching, currently I am working as a researcher in a Horizon Europe project FOSTERLANG (Fostering Linguistic Capital: Strategies for Reversing the Diversity Crisis and Activating Societal Benefits in Europe) and a project titled Online discourse on Ukrainians in the UK and Poland, funded by the British Academy.

prof. UAM dr hab. Emilia Wąsikiewicz-Firlej

Photo I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Ecolinguistics and Communicology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland. My research interests include ecolinguistics, professional and intercultural communication, and, more recently, multilingualism and family language policy. I have published over 60 academic papers in applied linguistics, including four monographs. From 2020 to 2023, I was involved in the international project MaMLiSE – Majority and Minority Languages in School Environment, funded by the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership Programme in the school education sector.

prof. dr Magda Stroińska

PhotoI did my MA in Warsaw and a PhD in Edinburgh. I have been a Professor of Linguistics and German at McMaster University since 1988. My major areas of research and publication include sociolinguistics, analysis of discourse, and cross-cultural issues in pragmatics and cognition, in particular linguistic representations of culture, cultural stereotyping, language and politics, propaganda, the issues of identity in exile, ageing and bilingualism, translation, interpretation and language brokering, as well as language and psychological trauma. I believe in experiential and hands-on approach to teaching and learning (and making it fun).

dr hab. Agnieszka Leńko-Szymańska

PhotoI am an Associate Professor at the Institute of Applied Linguistics, the University of Warsaw. My academic interests lie at the intersection of second language acquisition and corpus linguistics, with a focus on lexis and phraseology. I am also interested in the applications of corpora for language assessment. I frequently use learner corpora in my research. My latest monograph, Defining and Assessing Lexical Proficiency, was published by Routledge in 2021. Another area of my expertise is data-driven learning, specifically the use of corpora for teaching and learning foreign languages.

dr hab. Reinhold Utri

PhotoMy research interests include: Pluricentricity of the German language (variety in Austria), Bilingualism and Multilingualism, Interculturality, Didactics of the German language and Language policy. I have published more than 73 works (including: 40 scientific articles, 7 popular science articles, 20 reviews, 6 reports) and have been a co-editor of conference proceedings twice.

dr Ilona Banasiak

PhotoI am an assistant professor at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics of the University of Warsaw. I hold a PhD in Linguistics from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. My primary scholarly interests include second language acquisition, family language policy and bi-and multilingual education.

dr Ewa Bandura

PhotoI am a senior lecturer in the Institute of English Studies, Jagiellonian University in Kraków where I have been involved in teaching both academic language skills and intercultural communication. More recently, I have developed such courses as Critical skills for studying languages and cultures, Communication in multicultural settings, and Intercultural encounters in professional environments. I have published my research with Tertium, Multilingual Matters, Peter Lang, Cambridge Scholars, Information Age Publishing, and IGI Global. I have been a member of Cultnet international research group, and of the Association for Language Awareness Committee.

dr Breno Barreto de Silva

Photo My research interests include cross-linguistic influences, incidental and intentional vocabulary acquisition, multilingualism, and statistical modelling. I have also been an English as a Foreign Language teacher for over 20 years. Currently, I am involved in a few research projects, all related to vocabulary learning. My main current project is a multinational four-year enterprise investigating the learning of cognates and noncognates through writing and watching subtitled audiovisual material.

dr Maciej Durkiewicz

PhotoMy main research interests focus on the structures and varieties of contemporary Italian (especially CMC), with particular attention to higher levels of discourse organization, syntax, and textuality; on the Italian of Polish speakers, on contrastive Italian-Polish grammar, and on minority languages in Switzerland, Italian and Romansh.

I am the author of the monograph “Lingua e testualità dei diari on-line italiani” (Peter Lang 2020), and a co-author of the dictionary “Grande dizionario polacco-italiano, italiano-polacco” (Langenscheidt 2007/2015).

I write for “La Quotidiana,” the only Swiss newspaper entirely in Romansh. In 2019 I was awarded the First Prize (out of 191 entries) of the Pietro Carrera Poetry Competition (organized by the Accademia Il Convivio in Catania, Italy) for the best unpublished collection of poems in the Italian language.

dr Agnieszka Kałdonek-Crnjaković

PhotoI am an assistant professor at the Institute of English Studies (University of Warsaw), where I head the Department of Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies and teach courses related to my research interests, including teaching languages to students with neurodiverse profiles, e.g., dyslexia and ADHD. I am the founder and coordinator of the faculty research group Neurodiversity in Language Education. Before joining academia in 2018, I worked as a foreign/second language teacher and special needs teacher in Croatia, Poland, and the UK.

dr Monika Konert-Panek

PhotoMy research focuses on phonetics and phonology, sociolinguistics and style, and especially the choice of English variants in popular music. I am the author of the book “From Mentalism to Optimality Theory: Notion of the Basic Phonological Segment” (Warsaw University Press 2021) and several dozen papers and chapters in monographs. I am also Associate Editor for the  Journal of Language and Pop Culture .

dr Dominik Kudła

PhotoMy current research focuses mostly on video game localization (challenges encountered by translators, a careful approach to cultural elements, translation and technical errors, user reception) and translator training. I am also interested in other themes of translation studies, eye tracking methodology, language of sport, and contact linguistics. I actively cooperate with research teams from universities across Europe, e.g., Barcelona, Bratislava, Groningen or Siena. In 2018 I created and have been coordinating since then a meeting cycle “Applied Linguistics Students in the Labour Market”.

dr Karolina Muszyńska

PhotoI am a psycholinguist interested in language development in bilingual and monolingual children. My research focuses on vocabulary acquisition in children, including: bilingual vs. monolingual trajectories in early language development, relation between lexical and grammatical development, and ways of measuring vocabulary knowledge in young children (e.g., via parental reports, including online tools such mobile apps and questionnaires employing Computerized Adaptive
Testing).

dr Piotr Podemski

PhotoI am a historian, political and cultural scientist. With the University of Warsaw as my Alma Mater, I have further developed my expertise at other leading centres such as the European University Institute (Florence), the University of Notre Dame (USA), Warwick Business School (UK) and the Italian University for Foreigners (Perugia). As a Fulbright and Erasmus scholar, I have taught throughout Europe, in America and Asia (Iran, Jordan). In my research I deal with contemporary societies, their identities and experiences, including totalitarianism and populism as well as history education paradigms.

mgr Miłosz Marcjanik

PhotoI am a PhD candidate at the Doctoral School of Humanities, the University of Warsaw. My academic interests lie in sociolinguistics, English as a Lingua Franca, and World Englishes. My PhD research project focuses on English Medium Instruction (EMI) in Polish higher education. To develop a broader discourse on language policy and education in multilingual contexts, I explore the dynamics and challenges of implementing EMI, aiming to understand how this approach impacts both students and lecturers.
